What is Trenchless Technology? 

Trenchless technology is a form of underground construction that requires the use of few or no trenches at surface or street level. Trenchless technology uses new techniques and equipment to install or replace pipes without causing disturbance to the ground above.

For example a replacement of an existing sewer line can be put into place by either pipe bursting or pipe lining technologies. ... In pipe lining, a flexible pipe is coated with resin and is then blown or pulled through the old pipe. In pipe bursting launching and receiving pits" are excavated over the exiting pipe line, a large steel cable attached to an expander head and pulled through the host pipe breaking the old pipe and pulling a new one through, replacing the need for conventional pipe-laying.

These types of techniques replace or minimise the need of significant property damage and costly re instatements caused by digging up the earth, plants, driveways, roads, slabs, landscaped areas and structure built over the top of pipelines.

Directional drilling pipe thrusting and micro tunnelling are also similar trenchless technology options used to bring a new pipe to a desired location with minimal or no damage to the ground surface using a range of specialised equipment.
