If you experience a failed toilet or cistern, in addition to calling for assistance, there are some steps you should take:

• Find the source of the water supply to the troubled toilet and shut it off. If you can’t locate that particular supply, shut the main water valve off. Don't continue use.

• For blockages, Don't flush up stairs toilets or fixtures. (may flood below)

• Check outside for a gully trap or main connection to see if its overflowing.

• If the leak is near any electrical appliances, shut off your power to avoid electrocution.

• For health reasons, without correct P.P.E do not come in-contact with any biological contaminate.

Tips To Reduce The Risk Of An Emergency

Doing the clean up work after a sewer issue is not a fun job, so there are some things you can do to keep damage to a minimum.

• Find the shut-off valve to the toilet check its working.

• Re-frame from flushing anything but human waste and toilet paper down a toilet.

• If you plan on leaving home for more than a week, it’d be a good idea to shut your water off to the toilets and flush the water from your cistern to avoid a leak while you are away.
