Maintaining Your Rain Water Tank

If you already have a rainwater tank, you can't always take it for granted that you'll always have a reliable supply of rainwater. Research conducted by Utility Water providers have found some common problems tank owners face after a year or two. We suggest a few simple services to make sure your tank provides a clean and reliable source of water while using as little energy as possible.

What Rain Water Tank Maintenance Should Be Done?

To get the best performance, benefit & cleanliness from your rain water supply Jones Plumbers provide key rain water supply maintenance services.

Clean or replace filters

Filters for rainwater tend to block relatively quickly. We recommend servicing to clean or replace them. Some filters can be rinsed clear and re-used several times, while others need to be replaced. It's unlikely that a water filter will be able to remove any colour in your rainwater supply. The source of the colour will most likely be in your gutters or at the bottom of your tank. Grit from tiled roofs and leaf litter from trees are common causes. Diverting this material away before it enters your tank is the most effective way to reduce or eliminate any colour in your rainwater supply. Additional filters and U.V. treatment lamps can also be added.

Clean your gutters

The gutters and downpipes that divert water from your roof into your tank are a key component of any rainwater tank system. They're also a common oversight for many tank owners.
A blocked gutter is more likely to overflow during heavy rain. An overflowing gutter won't fill your tank nearly as quickly as a free-flowing one. Grit from tiled roofs and leaf litter from trees can cause gutters to prematurely fail & discolours your tank water, if left untreated it can also cause issue with your toilets when connected.

Some of our Service options are to install good quality gutter guards or downpipe screens, Rainheads and/or take advantage of our gutter cleaning services.

Fit or clean: first flush device

When it rains, a 'first flush device' prevents the first water from your roof (with the most dirt etc), from entering the tank. If you don't have one we can fit one. If you do have one we can service & clean your flow restrictor for you. A lack of maintenance will eventually see the first flush device remain full of dirty water, which will soon become stagnant. When the device is full, it won't be able to catch the next 'first flush' of dirty water allowing the first flush gunk to enter the tank system.

Clean your tank screen

If you have an above ground tank, you need a screen cover. This will:

  • stop any leaf litter that's passed through your gutter guards or downpipe screens from getting into your tank

  • act as a barrier to any potential vermin that gain access to the top of your tank.

We service & clean the screen cover!

Clean or fit Rainhead

Rainheads are a primary leaf litter removal device and a overflow sump container, located between the gutter and down-pipe it aids the flow of water away from the roof. It also acts as an external overflow point to minimise water surges into the storm-water system and aid the flow of water down the down-pipe, minimising the risk of water overflowing inside a building.

We service & clean your rain head to ensure clean even flow.

Check or service mains switching devices

Mains switching devices are designed to fail 'safe'.
This means you'll continue to receive water from the drinking water supply when your tank is empty or your pump has stopped. Sometimes mains switching devices fail due to an electrical storm or blackout. They need to be manually reset them.
We providing servicing to manufacturer's instructions so ensure the correct operating status of your switching device.
We provide onsite instructions & recommend regularly checking your switching device to make sure it's operating normally. That way you will always be making the most of your rainwater supply.

Rainwater Tanks Benefits

Rainwater tanks capture rainwater from your roof and store it for later use. You can then use the stored water around your home and garden.
A properly installed and working rainwater tank can save up to 40% of your drinking water supply. This can add up to about 96,000 litres! Not to mention the environmental benefits.

  • A typical rainwater tank in the gisborne area will cost at least $2,000-$3,500 to buy and install. This will depend on the size of the tank and complexity of the installation.

  • We offer Supply & Install Packages or Installation only.

What needs to be considered?

An ideal rainwater tank installation for an average 3 bed home would:

  • Store at least 2,500 - 4,500 litres of rainwater

  • Be connected to over 75% of the available roof area

  • Select a viable area and a suitable tank

  • Have an energy efficient pump and distribution system

  • Add a good filtration system and feed as many points as you legally can or as a minimum supply rainwater to at least one toilet and the clothes washing machine.

  • Provide a fail-safe water supply that uses a mains switching device connected to the drinking water supply.
